Base Simulator PC work begins

Base Simulator PC work begins

Started work on the simulator PC tonight.

Turns out the graphics card we have bought (Gigabyte GTX 550 Ti OC 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI PCI-E) is large that it is not going to fit into the donor PC that Cpl Burn gave to the Squadron.  The cooling fan interferes with where the graphic mounts into the AGP slot.  Bit of a pain.

Some lateral thinking is required.  My PC (i.e. the OC) is a quad-core intel-based machine with 3GB RAM in it already, so it pretty powerful to begin with.  Opened it up tonight and did a test fit of the graphics card and it fits just fine.  So, the sim will have a more powerful based machine to begin with which has to be a positive thing!

As Mark Zuckerberg would say, moving right along....

The graphics card needs a decent power supply to make it go - anything below 400w isnt going to cut it.  The PSU installed in this machine is only a 250w unit so we need something a bit more powerful to get it to go.  The card itself has two power inputs which means it really sucks up the juice.....so tomorrow, we need to get a new PSU and get that installed and we should be good to go.
